The Philadelphia Museum of Art carpet which inspired our
Wheel design is shown above. It features two full interlace medallions
of different sizes and a Kufic border,
along with a complex inner guard border. With its high knot count and mixture of symmetrical and
asymmetrical
knots, the genesis and age of this carpet (and others of this
type) is passionately debated among scholars. It has been
attributed as far west as Konya in Anatolia and as far east as Tabriz
in Persia. Age estimates range from the 13th to the 16th century. All agree though, that it is
a magnificently designed and crafted rug. |
