Our design for Andrea Pacciani is based on a carpet that is
owned by the Monastery Church is Shigisoara, Transylvania. Typical
elements of these small format Chintamani are the stepped arch,
corner designs in the field, and lattice borders. The
structure of the Chintamani rugs is consistent, they have ivory
warps and wefts, lazy lines, short pile and a very limited range of
color. One interesting theory about the white ground
carpets holds that they were meant for "hamadans" (public
baths). Probably dating from the early 17th century,
this rug contains several areas with major repairs. Our
thanks to carpet scholar Stefano Ionescu for the use of this
photograph, from his book "Antique Ottoman Rugs in Transylvania (www.transylvanianrugs.com). |
