The first known depiction of this pattern is in the"Madonna &
Child" alterpiece by Gentile Bellini, 1480-1485 (above left). The
carpet on the right, from the Berlin Museum of Islamic Art,
which inspired our design for Andrea Pacciani, is a unique and striking composition,
with it's dominant red field, medallion centerpiece and green
ground Kufic border. The minor guard borders are also
especially well developed. These elements suggest a
sophisticated designer or workshop as well as an early date for
this carpet. |
